I did find meeting my first mother in 1993 critical to the process of affirming my identity. Over the years, I have learned about my heritage, but It wasn't until this summer, when I gained legal access to my birth certificate and notes about her from Catholic Charities, that I got a more complete picture of her abandonment, and how she finally signed the release. My father left me at 2 yrs. old and I never saw him again and, frankly, didn't want to.
